City of Rauma introduces contactless payments that address the need for anonymous discounted fares

  • At the beginning of this year, LS-Liikennelinjat Oy, launched contactless payments in Rauma, Finland.
  • Concessionary discounts are available for children, groups and over 65s, bringing extra value to riders.

Two weeks ago, the City of Rauma became the eighth city in Finland to deploy contactless open-loop payments using Littlepay’s transit infrastructure. LS-Liikennelinjat Oy has installed contactless EMV payment readers across a fleet of 15 buses, with plans to expand the program in other cities where they operate. This project has been developed in collaboration with Pusatec for card validation and Nets Group Finland for acquiring services.

As we increase our presence in certain regions, we strive to work with our partners to best support the communities we serve. In this instance, the merchant identified the need for contactless concessionary travel that doesn’t require riders to register before travelling on a bus. We worked closely with our partners to develop a solution that addresses this issue. This deployment provides anonymous discounted fares for children and groups under the supervision of the driver. When a passenger boards, the driver chooses the relevant concession fare type. Once the passenger taps on the device, they will be charged the discounted fare.

We’re proud to support the city of Rauma in bringing contactless EMV fare collection to their community. This project is particularly exciting as this will be the showcase of anonymous discount functionality, bringing concessionary fares and caps for children and groups. This innovative solution is a great way to allow eligible groups to have access to discounted fares without the need to pre-register whilst experiencing the convenience and cost savings associated with pay as you go travel.

Our business development manager, Sarah McLaughlin, has been working with Jari Paasikivi, CEO of LS-Liikennelinjat Oy, for a few years. Their systematic collaboration has led to this deployment in Rauma, which falls outside of our original commitments in Finland.

It’s been great working with Jari as we expanded within the country. We’ve created a strong partnership and now, in collaboration with our partners at Pusatec, this relationship has continued outside of our original scope. This project has produced some brilliant innovations that close the gap on what cEMV contactless can do to replace legacy systems
