Case study
National roll-out of contactless open loop payments in Finland
Problem
Helsinki Regional Transport (HSL) and TVV lippu- ja maksujärjestelmä Oy (LMJ) wanted to encourage sustainable transport choices. With contactless payments widely adopted in Finland, they were confident tap-to-pay options on public transport would be popular. By simplifying transit ticketing, it aimed to improve passenger experience and boost ridership.
Solution
Littlepay was selected to provide a cEMV payments system, which could be adapted to each city’s needs. Technology partners included PPT Excellence, Pusatec, Logos and Feig. For acquiring services, a new integration was established with Nets. Contactless EMV fare payments have made it easier for residents, commuters and tourists to use public transport.

Californians to ride not drive
Californians to ride not drive
Problem
Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation, identified the need for a statewide contactless EMV fare collection system to simplify fare payments and stimulate a shift from widespread car use toward more people using public transit. Through contactless demonstrations and the development of a Mobility Marketplace, it aims to help transit agencies understand the benefits of cEMV and remove the barriers to procuring systems.
Solution
Littlepay participated in contactless open loop demonstrations in Monterey, Sacramento and Santa Barbara. These took a modular approach to building a cEMV system, the same concept championed by the California Integrated Travel Project’s (Cal-ITP’s) Mobility Marketplace. Transit agencies can buy components at pre-negotiated rates, which integrate together. Littlepay is an approved vendor of transit payment processing.
